Biography
Wunderlich
Ernest Wunderlich arrived in Australia from London in 1885. He was later joined by his two brothers Alfred and Otto. Ernest's business as an agent for European manufacturers of building material was established in 1887. By 1888 Wunderlich were manufacturing their own metal roofing and ceiling materials at their first factory in Redfern, NSW.
Experiment in pottery production which had begun in 1912 was stepped up to full scale production of roofing tiles after the outbreak of the first world war and the subsequent unavailability of tiles previously imported from Marseilles. Potteries were established at Rosehill, NSW and Brunswick, Victoria, and soon branches of the firm were established in all Australian states and New Zealand.
The pottery exists today as Wunderlich Terracotta Roofing Tiles, at Rosehill, NSW.
