Abstract

This compelling suite of twelve original prints by acclaimed artist John Young AM, retells the remarkable story of Jong Ah Siug (c1837-1900) in exquisite detail through the artist’s lens and medium of contemporary print.

The exhibition brings to life the diary of Jong Ah Siug (held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria), providing a unique account of life on the Victorian Goldfields and Jong’s 33-year incarceration in asylums until his death in 1900.

Created in collaboration with APW Printers during John's APW Collie Print Trust Printmaking Fellowship, this suite of original intaglios with lithography reflect John's long held bi-cultural perspective and more recent interest in the history of the Chinese in Australia since 1840.
