Subject description

'Shows three men outside the telegraphic station, two of whom are reading a notice on the flagstaff. This image shows the 'telegraphic station' on the highpoint of Flagstaff Hill. The 'telegraph' referred to in the title is the flagstaff, which was used to convey information about shipping arrivals. This station had nothing to do with the later 'electric telegraph', which actually made it redundant.' [State Library of Victoria].
